The Bodo-Kacharis, also known simply as Kacharis or Bodos, encompass a diverse collection of ethnic groups primarily located in the Northeast Indian states of Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya. They speak languages belonging to the Bodo-Garo group or Assamese. Historically, the Kacharis were pioneers in sericulture, being the first to rear silkworms and produce silk. They were associated with the ashu rice culture in Assam before the introduction of sali rice from the Gangetic plains.

Among them, the Thengal Kacharis stand out as a prominent tribe in Assam, known for their distinctive socio-cultural beliefs and practices that deeply influence their daily lives. These customs, rooted in reverence for animals, trees, and traditional ceremonies like Bihu, govern aspects of life from birth to marriage and death. Despite assimilating into broader Assamese society over time, the Thengal Kacharis have preserved their unique cultural identity through these enduring traditions.
