ishi is a collective based in Ukhrul, India seeking to create a safe and creative space for the youth of the Tangkhul tribe for self-expression and interpretation of their culture by means of a bilingual magazine publication (Tangkhul-English) called ishi, meaning ‘us’ in the Tangkhul language.
ishi is a collective of four women particularly interested in making sense of their distinct culture in these rapidly homogenizing times; the need for recognition, and reinterpretation of their cultural identities and self.
ishi draws inspiration from the pedagogy of the Longshim, a dormitory-like institution in the Tangkhul Naga culture, where traditional forms of education were imparted through interaction, dialogue and story-telling. ishi also hosts workshops and webinars pertaining to indigenous identity and culture; documentation, deliberation and preservation as written forms can at times unconsciously snub the nuances, especially that of our immaterial culture.
