Director Biography
Narendra Pardhi, Sahebram Bediya

Green Hub Fellows Sahebram Bediya and Narendra Pardhi will present a screening and discussion of their film documenting the return of a herd of elephants to the village of Pithoria in Jharkhand after a 17-year absence. This short film explores the rising human-elephant conflict in the region, set against a backdrop of mining, deforestation, and urban growth. The narrative delves into the challenges faced by both the elephants and the local communities as natural habitats shrink and human settlements expand.

Sahebram Bediya, notably the first person from his village to document the return of the elephants, provides a unique and intimate perspective on the situation. The film captures the complex dynamics between wildlife and human populations, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to mitigate conflicts and protect biodiversity. The screening will be followed by a talk and Q&A session, where Bediya and Pardhi will discuss the making of the film, the broader implications of human-wildlife conflicts in Jharkhand, and potential strategies for coexistence. The session will also provide insights into the role of community engagement and conservation efforts in addressing environmental challenges.

They possess a rich cultural heritage of folk songs, dances, and tales, along with traditional musical instruments like the Mandar, Nagara, and Kartal. Both men and women participate in dances, performed at social events and festivals, including war dances, Karma dance, Khaddi or Sarhul dance, and various ceremonial dances known as "Dandi" in Kurukh.
